Canvassing is most effective for both persuasion and Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV). Canvassing is proven method to contact voters, but the number of contacts one person can make is limited. If you can walk and talk, anybody can canvass with a training, which is offered at the event. To prepare you for canvassing events Bay Area Coalition is offering weekly online training on Tuesdays at 7pm. Canvassing targets Democrats/likely supporters, and conversations are generally friendly. Most canvassing requires smartphone to access voter lists (If you don’t own one, you will be paired with another canvasser with the app.)
Neighbor to Neighbor campaign offered by Indivisible for Yes on Prop 50 will assign 10 neighbors, likely supporters, to talk to. Easy way to tip your toes into canvassing.
Phone banking with auto dialer will connect you to one person after another so you get the biggest bang for your time. You can start with volunteer recruitment calls, which is super friendly and rewarding.
Texting is effective for event invitation and GOTV since the information is right under voters’ finger top. Through texting apps you will be able to send 1000s of messages in a short time. The need of texters are declining as technology changes. As numbers of texts increase voter fatigue is apparent in battleground states, and texting campaigns require well executed strategy to be effective.
Postcards and letters could be effective and sometime only way to reach voters who live rural area without known phone numbers. Volunteer enthusiasm is a blessing for the campaigns since stamps are getting more expensive.
We humans are social creatures, and when we get reminded multiple times in many ways by different people, it increases the likelihood of voting. So all is needed!
Finally donation is important to support movements and elections. We want you to donate strategically. What is your goal? Donation asks are design to push your emotional buttons. Instead of donating when you receive donation asks or your favorite politicians, research and donate to those that meet your goals and expectations. Matched and monthly donations are appreciated and check if your employer will match your donation. After all our fund is limited and we can support so much.
