My name is Julie Greenfield, and I am honored to be a candidate for AD20 State Democratic delegate. I have spent my life working for the democratic ideals of equality, freedom and peace, and I look forward to continuing to pursue those ideals during these challenging times.

My youth was spent participating in the great social movements of the 1960s and 70s. As a teen in New York, I organized picket lines for the United Farm Workers’ grape strike and boycott. Eventually, the UFW brought me to California, where I was a volunteer during the Salinas lettuce strike. I learned from Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta and the workers about the power of working people when they stand up together. I never forgot this inspiring lesson.

I became a Nurse to “serve the people,” especially the underserved members of our community. I last worked full-time as a School Nurse in the Hayward Unified School District, where I served for 16 years (and still substitute). There I worked with and advocated for students with special needs of all types.

In addition, I was a union representative in the Hayward Education Association (HEA). I served on the Executive Board, and in 2007, following the 10-day Teacher strike, I was awarded the WHO (We Honor our Own) award.

I cofounded the Eden Area Interfaith Council following an incident of Islamophobia in a local park. My synagogue joined with churches, mosques, and temples, marching down Castro Valley Boulevard proclaiming “Unity in the Community.” One of my proudest moments was a rally we sponsored at Hayward City Hall in 2017 in support of DACA students. I was honored to receive a Hearts of Hayward Volunteer award.

I continue my Public Health Nursing practice teaching the next generation of Nursing students at CSUEB and SFSU.

I have consistently worked to support Democratic candidates. In 2024, I made phone calls, wrote postcards, and went to the Central Valley to canvass for Adam Gray, who won CD-13 with a bare 187 vote margin thanks to a great volunteer effort.

I hope to bring a grounded, positive voice to our State and local Democratic efforts. We have amazing people doing great work in our community, and I want to amplify their efforts to protect the rights of women, immigrants, bring an end to homelessness and support our educational system.
